3 Ways To Spot a Job Scam (based on my friend’s real experience!)

August 23, 2018 By Heather Hernandez Leave a Comment

My husband got a call from his friend who was very excited to share that he’d just been offered a very lucrative job. My husband congratulated him and jokingly said “Hey, maybe you can get me a job there too!” When he got off the phone he shared with me exactly how lucrative the job offer was including an outrageous signing bonus and a very high salary. He was ready to accept the job offer, was planning on telling his current employer the next day, and had already getting rid of his stuff in preparation for a move overseas for his new job.

I was skeptical so I started asking questions about this job offer. And then I googled “COMPANY NAME job scam” to see what would pop up. The company had a web page dedicated to “Email scam” and describe in detail how it usually occurs. They said “fraudsters use our COMPANY name to solicit job applications, contract proposals, investment opportunities, or personal information and requests the victims to provide funds or personal information for job-applications, visas, processing fees, or investments.” The continue to say “communications from any source other than an “@COMPANY.com” domain site should be treated suspiciously.”

I alerted my husband to call his friend back and ask him what email address the job offer came from and to warn him that this might be a job scam! The email he received was not from the domain site – but from the domain with extra stuff added to the end. So it looked official, but it was not. He called the company’s hiring office to ask about the job offer he received by email, and they confirmed that it was a job scam and he should ignore it.

He was grateful that we warned him to scrutinize this job offer and check to make sure it’s legitimate. None of his othe friends were suspicious and simply congratulated him.

3 Ways to Spot a Job Scam:

So here’s what I learned about how to spot a job scam, because it could happen to me or someone I know!

1. They Contact You (and you didn’t apply for the specific job they are contacting you about)

Keep track of the jobs you apply for by keeping a log. This will help you identify any job scams quickly because usually the scam job offer is for a job you never applied for. So our friend had previously applied for a position at the COMPANY but hadn’t applied for any positions recently. Scammers probably didn’t know this, but because they knew his current job title, they could have guessed which companies he’d be interested in working for.

2.  The Job Offer is Too Good to be True

It it’s too good to be true, it’s probably not true! This idiom applies to job offers too. If the salary offer is very high and they include an outrageous signing bonus then you need to really triple check that it’s a real job offer by independently verifying it. This means you call the company’s headquarters or hiring office and ask them about your specific job offer.

3.  Email Address is Suspicious

It’s easy to check the email address by visiting the company’s website. It must exactly match the company’s official email structure because it’s too easy for scammers to set-up fake domains and email addresses with the company’s name plus extra stuff after the company’s name.

I hope these tips are helpful and if you have any other tips to share please feel free to leave a comment on this post!

4 Websites for your Job Search

July 3, 2018 By Heather Hernandez Leave a Comment

I found my second job after college by searching job listings in the newspaper of the city I wanted to live in! Wow, things have changed a lot since then ~ so I’m sharing what I’m learning as I embark on my own job search:

************************************************************************

Websites to look at when you’re job searching:

Facebook Jobs – I had no idea that Facebook had a jobs section . . . until I needed to search for a job! I like it because you can specify location (and how far you’re willing to travel) plus select your Industry and Job type.
Indeed.com – My friend just told me about this website, and apparently I’ve been living under a rock (an employed rock) because I’ve never heard of it!
ZipRecruiter.com – My classmate recommended this website for job searching so I’m going to try it!
LinkedIn – The King (or Queen) of job search websites. I recommend you login to LinkedIn on a regular basis and start networking with those in your field. You never know where your next job lead will come from so it’s good to start expanding your network!

4 Free Online Tools for Women Entrepreneurs

July 2, 2018 By Heather Hernandez Leave a Comment

It’s fun to learn new things and I’m learning a lot of new things by taking courses towards my Master’s in Marketing!

************************************************************************

Here are four FREE online tools that are new to me and I recommend you check them out:

Grammarly – the world’s most accurate free online grammar checker. When I used it for a long proposal I had written, it found several small errors. These were things that I wanted to correct, but needed them called to my attention first (and Word did not catch these errors). It even checks the grammar of your emails!
Gimp – a free downloadable graphics software. When I volunteered to make a collage of my group members photos for our Applied Business Research Presentation, I wanted to turn the color photos into black & white. This was not something I could do with my trusty PicMonkey, so I searched for a free tool. Gimp can turn color photos into black & white plus a lot more!
When2Meet – a free availability calendar for groups to find the best meeting time. When my group of 5 had to meet, we used When2Meet to find a time when we were all free to Skype – worked like a charm! It’s very basic, but gets the job done by showing you graphically when everyone is available.
List.ly – a free list-building tool, think of it as “Pinterest for Words”. I haven’t time to explore this tool fully, but I love the idea. And I think it might be a great way for marketers to do some research!

How did I end up as a Master’s in Marketing student at Texas A&M University Commerce?

June 19, 2018 By Heather Hernandez Leave a Comment

I’m taking my first course in pursuit of my Master’s in Science in Marketing at Texas A&M University Commerce and asking myself how I got here? It was kind of by accident, and by reading a listicle believe it or not ~ here’s what happened:

************************************************************************
I thought I was going to attend in-person classes that Sam Houston University offered at my local community college. But then when they cancelled them suddenly and I was in a quandry ~ how was I going to get my Master’s in Marketing degree?
I did a lot of searching online to find other schools that offered a Master’s in Marketing in Houston. I even considered switching over to a Master’s in Business Administration just so I could attend a local university. I didn’t find a program near me for a Master’s in Marketing, so I got desperate and started looking at online degree options.

Then I ran across this listicle:  30 Most Affordable Master’s in Marketing Online Degrees 2018 and being the frugal person I am, I went all the way down to the #1 most affordable Master’s in Marketing online degree which was at Texas A&M University Commerce.

I applied in less than an hour and was pleasantly surprised that the GRE requirement was waived because my GPA was above 3.0 from my bachelor’s degree. I was accepted fairly quickly (in just a few days) and able to start taking courses 2 semesters earlier than I planned! Wow – what a pleasant surprise and now I want to shout it out on the rooftop:  “It’s easier than you think to get your Master’s degree online!”

Not to say that the coursework is easy (it’s anything but that). My first course is challenging. I mean like so challenging it’s really pushing my capabilities and forcing me to learn new things quickly. But I’m so happy I found my school and I’m so happy I’m not wasting time commuting to classes!

I love that online degree programs obliterate geographical limitations. Now the limiting factor feels like money. I dislike spending money on my own education when I’m trying to save for both of my sons’ college educations (in 7 and 6 years from now). But thankfully my employer is helping me pay for my degree and I have savings to rely on. And thanks to the option of summer courses I should be able to get my degree in less than 3 years!
I know that by getting my Master’s degree I’m investing in my future and the truth is I still love learning a lot!

The Health Insurance Dilemna for Entrepreneurs: How I’m Getting Good Coverage

The Health Insurance Dilemna for Entrepreneurs: How I'm Getting Good Coverage

I want to tell you about my recent health care adventure, or maybe I should call it my healthcare nightmare.

************************************************************************
I’m on my own for the first time ever to get health insurance for my family of four. We’ve always had an employer that provided us with health insurance until my husband got laid off in February of 2015. We paid for 18 months of COBRA insurance coverage in order to keep our good preferred provider organization (PPO) health insurance plan. Then the day came when our 18 months was up and my husband still did not have a full-time job. We were panicking because we were treading in unknown waters and from everything we’d heard, it was not going to be easy going.
 *
We learned that no matter how much you pay, you still can’t buy a good health insurance policy in the current health insurance market. That’s because the only policies available in the individual market are health maintenance organizations (HMOs). So now we pay a lot of money (more than our mortgage payment) for health insurance, and that health insurance only provides us with a benefit if we spend more than our deductible of $3,500 per individual ($10,500 per family).
 *
Now in an average year, we are not spending anywhere close to $3,500 per person. So what we’re really paying for is health insurance for major medical expenses, for if someone needs surgery or is in the hospital.
 *
As luck would have it, I found out in August (with only one month of COBRA coverage left) that I would probably need minor surgery. Because of the testing involved to see if I even qualified for the surgery, I wasn’t able to schedule the surgery before September 1 (when our health insurance coverage changed to HMO). I actually had my surgery scheduled for September 12, but the HMO wouldn’t pay for it because the doctor was out of network. And I certainly couldn’t pay for it since it cost about $20,000.
 *
So I searched to find an in-network doctor that did this specialized surgery. When I found a doctor, I got a referral to see him from my primary care physician (PCP). So I thought I was set and had all my ducks in a row to have surgery soon so I could get back to healthy!
 *
Little did I know that there was a problem with my magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). My new doctor couldn’t get the information he needed from the MRI because it was done incorrectly. He did not have the information he needed to proceed with my treatment and I would need to get a new MRI. It would only cost me $3,500 (my deductible). Being frugal, my doctor advised me to try to live with my minor symptoms until January. Then we could proceed with the MRI and I would meet my annual deductible at the beginning of the year in order to maximize my benefit from my health insurance. I agreed it made sense to wait, and while I’m waiting I’m pursuing alternative natural remedies for my symptoms.
 *
I loved my doctor for being frugal and caring about his patients’ finances. I hated that I needed additional testing because it wasn’t done right the first time. Heck, after the testing was done I still might not be a good candidate for the surgery I wanted to have!
 *
Meanwhile, I’m searching for a full-time job that provides health insurance while I’m feeling less than stellar because of my health problem. I’m seriously depressed because it feels like I’m giving up my dream of being self-employed and because even if I find a job I’ll still have to bust my butt evenings and weekends to keep my business going (and pay the business bills). I looked into the healthcare sharing programs, but they didn’t help me because you still have to pay for all expenses. So I would still have to pay $20,000 for surgery, but I could submit any amount over $300 to receive help for from other members.
 *
Hold your horses! I have my own business so can’t I get health insurance through my business? I asked my accountant and he recommended finding a Dave Ramsey Endorsed Local Provider (ELP) for insurance (by the way, the Dave Ramsey website is how I found my stellar accountant). So I called the only ELP for insurance in Houston and told him about my healthcare dilemma. He said that I could get a health insurance plan through my business if I had two employees on the payroll. So I hired my hubby to do the IT for my business.
*
I hope to have my new PPO health insurance plan in about 3 months. I’m hopeful we will get better health insurance so that we’ll have more money available for saving for our children’s college education and saving for our own retirement. I’m angry that our health insurance system is so broken that it’s costing my middle income family more to get health insurance than it does to keep a roof over our heads.
*
UPDATE:  We got quotes for getting health insurance through my business.  It was expensive and the coverage was lousy – it felt like paying to NOT have health insurance. The solution? I found a full-time job working remotely and got excellent health insurance. Actually, the health insurance through my new employer was so good it was the best we’d ever had! Everything was a copay, so it was affordable to go to the doctor, and affordable for the surgery I needed. Instead of paying a percentage of the surgery’s cost (which would have been thousands of dollars out of my pocket), I paid a $100 copay for the hospital stay.
*
So, the lesson that my family learned is that we must have an employer in order to get good health insurance. It’s sad but true that entrepreneurs have a challenging time finding good health insurance. And we had to learn that the hard way through first-hand experience.
************************************************************************
I hope that you learn something from my experience and I’d love to learn more from you!
