10 Tips to Update Your Resume Right Now

August 27, 2018 By Heather Hernandez Leave a Comment

I’m learning a lot about how to update my resume to make it the best it can be for my job search in 2018. I will admit it’s been awhile since I’ve been job searching, so I’m finding that things have changed and I have a lot to learn about how to update my resume. So as I learn I want to share these resume tips with you, because you should always be updating your resume because you never know when you’ll need it next!

************************************************************************

Tip #1 – Remove your address

It’s unnecessary and you don’t want potential employers to use it to weed you out (i.e. “she lives too far away to work here”). It has also become a potential privacy issue since you may be handing your resume out at career fairs and at other events where you’re not completing a formal job application. You don’t want to share your address unless you’re required to on a job application form.

Tip #2 – Take out “I” and “me” everywhere

It’s already known you’re talking about yourself, so take out “I” and “me”. Most of my resume is bulleted lists, but my introduction is a paragraph so here’s how I removed “I” from my sentences:  “I am a part-time student…” becomes “Part-time student…”

Tip #3 – Use past tense

When describing your work experience, use past tense (i.e. managed, produced, wrote, hosted, etc.).

Tip #4 – Divide your skills

Your list of skills can become long, so think about dividing it into different categories. I divided my skills into two categories:  1) Professional Skills and 2) Computer Skills.

Tip #5 – Two Pages is OK

I had it drilled in my head when I was in college that a resume had to be ONE PAGE with no exceptions! Today it is ok if your resume is one or two pages long. Because my resume starts with a Professional Profile paragraph, I need that second page to list my Professional Skills and Computer Skills.

Tip #6 – Start with a Summary

Consider starting your resume with a summary or introduction of who you are, what your job experience is and what skills you can bring to a company. I call this section “Professional Profile” and it’s the best way for me to explain how I transitioned from civil engineering to marketing and that I’m currently attending graduate school part-time.

Tip #7 – Consider removing dates

If you’re concerned with age discrimination then consider removing the dates of your degrees and dates of your work experience. Yes, most job applications will require these dates ~ but that doesn’t mean they have to be on your resume!

Tip #8 – Add your LinkedIn Profile URL

Add your LinkedIn Profile URL to the top of your resume (in your Contact section) so it’s easy for anyone to find you on LinkedIn and connect with you there.

Tip #9 – Add locations for your job experience

This was something I somehow left off my resume – the cities where my most recent jobs were in. This was an important detail to add because my last full-time position was a remote position and there are companies that are seeking marketing professionals with experience working remotely (yes, you need to have special skills to work remotely like self-motivated and self-discipline).

Tip #10 – Remove horizontal lines

I learned that horizontal lines can interfere with the ATS (Applicant Tracking System) that many companies employ to scan resumes into their system. When you use horizontal lines to breakup sections, it can cause ATS to skip text in your resume. Use headers and icons to indicate different sections of your resume instead.

3 Ways To Spot a Job Scam (based on my friend’s real experience!)

August 23, 2018 By Heather Hernandez Leave a Comment

My husband got a call from his friend who was very excited to share that he’d just been offered a very lucrative job. My husband congratulated him and jokingly said “Hey, maybe you can get me a job there too!” When he got off the phone he shared with me exactly how lucrative the job offer was including an outrageous signing bonus and a very high salary. He was ready to accept the job offer, was planning on telling his current employer the next day, and had already getting rid of his stuff in preparation for a move overseas for his new job.

I was skeptical so I started asking questions about this job offer. And then I googled “COMPANY NAME job scam” to see what would pop up. The company had a web page dedicated to “Email scam” and describe in detail how it usually occurs. They said “fraudsters use our COMPANY name to solicit job applications, contract proposals, investment opportunities, or personal information and requests the victims to provide funds or personal information for job-applications, visas, processing fees, or investments.” The continue to say “communications from any source other than an “@COMPANY.com” domain site should be treated suspiciously.”

I alerted my husband to call his friend back and ask him what email address the job offer came from and to warn him that this might be a job scam! The email he received was not from the domain site – but from the domain with extra stuff added to the end. So it looked official, but it was not. He called the company’s hiring office to ask about the job offer he received by email, and they confirmed that it was a job scam and he should ignore it.

He was grateful that we warned him to scrutinize this job offer and check to make sure it’s legitimate. None of his othe friends were suspicious and simply congratulated him.

3 Ways to Spot a Job Scam:

So here’s what I learned about how to spot a job scam, because it could happen to me or someone I know!

1. They Contact You (and you didn’t apply for the specific job they are contacting you about)

Keep track of the jobs you apply for by keeping a log. This will help you identify any job scams quickly because usually the scam job offer is for a job you never applied for. So our friend had previously applied for a position at the COMPANY but hadn’t applied for any positions recently. Scammers probably didn’t know this, but because they knew his current job title, they could have guessed which companies he’d be interested in working for.

2.  The Job Offer is Too Good to be True

It it’s too good to be true, it’s probably not true! This idiom applies to job offers too. If the salary offer is very high and they include an outrageous signing bonus then you need to really triple check that it’s a real job offer by independently verifying it. This means you call the company’s headquarters or hiring office and ask them about your specific job offer.

3.  Email Address is Suspicious

It’s easy to check the email address by visiting the company’s website. It must exactly match the company’s official email structure because it’s too easy for scammers to set-up fake domains and email addresses with the company’s name plus extra stuff after the company’s name.

I hope these tips are helpful and if you have any other tips to share please feel free to leave a comment on this post!

4 Websites for your Job Search

July 3, 2018 By Heather Hernandez Leave a Comment

I found my second job after college by searching job listings in the newspaper of the city I wanted to live in! Wow, things have changed a lot since then ~ so I’m sharing what I’m learning as I embark on my own job search:

************************************************************************

Websites to look at when you’re job searching:

Facebook Jobs – I had no idea that Facebook had a jobs section . . . until I needed to search for a job! I like it because you can specify location (and how far you’re willing to travel) plus select your Industry and Job type.
Indeed.com – My friend just told me about this website, and apparently I’ve been living under a rock (an employed rock) because I’ve never heard of it!
ZipRecruiter.com – My classmate recommended this website for job searching so I’m going to try it!
LinkedIn – The King (or Queen) of job search websites. I recommend you login to LinkedIn on a regular basis and start networking with those in your field. You never know where your next job lead will come from so it’s good to start expanding your network!

4 Free Online Tools for Women Entrepreneurs

July 2, 2018 By Heather Hernandez Leave a Comment

It’s fun to learn new things and I’m learning a lot of new things by taking courses towards my Master’s in Marketing!

************************************************************************

Here are four FREE online tools that are new to me and I recommend you check them out:

Grammarly – the world’s most accurate free online grammar checker. When I used it for a long proposal I had written, it found several small errors. These were things that I wanted to correct, but needed them called to my attention first (and Word did not catch these errors). It even checks the grammar of your emails!
Gimp – a free downloadable graphics software. When I volunteered to make a collage of my group members photos for our Applied Business Research Presentation, I wanted to turn the color photos into black & white. This was not something I could do with my trusty PicMonkey, so I searched for a free tool. Gimp can turn color photos into black & white plus a lot more!
When2Meet – a free availability calendar for groups to find the best meeting time. When my group of 5 had to meet, we used When2Meet to find a time when we were all free to Skype – worked like a charm! It’s very basic, but gets the job done by showing you graphically when everyone is available.
List.ly – a free list-building tool, think of it as “Pinterest for Words”. I haven’t time to explore this tool fully, but I love the idea. And I think it might be a great way for marketers to do some research!

How did I end up as a Master’s in Marketing student at Texas A&M University Commerce?

June 19, 2018 By Heather Hernandez Leave a Comment

I’m taking my first course in pursuit of my Master’s in Science in Marketing at Texas A&M University Commerce and asking myself how I got here? It was kind of by accident, and by reading a listicle believe it or not ~ here’s what happened:

************************************************************************
I thought I was going to attend in-person classes that Sam Houston University offered at my local community college. But then when they cancelled them suddenly and I was in a quandry ~ how was I going to get my Master’s in Marketing degree?
I did a lot of searching online to find other schools that offered a Master’s in Marketing in Houston. I even considered switching over to a Master’s in Business Administration just so I could attend a local university. I didn’t find a program near me for a Master’s in Marketing, so I got desperate and started looking at online degree options.

Then I ran across this listicle:  30 Most Affordable Master’s in Marketing Online Degrees 2018 and being the frugal person I am, I went all the way down to the #1 most affordable Master’s in Marketing online degree which was at Texas A&M University Commerce.

I applied in less than an hour and was pleasantly surprised that the GRE requirement was waived because my GPA was above 3.0 from my bachelor’s degree. I was accepted fairly quickly (in just a few days) and able to start taking courses 2 semesters earlier than I planned! Wow – what a pleasant surprise and now I want to shout it out on the rooftop:  “It’s easier than you think to get your Master’s degree online!”

Not to say that the coursework is easy (it’s anything but that). My first course is challenging. I mean like so challenging it’s really pushing my capabilities and forcing me to learn new things quickly. But I’m so happy I found my school and I’m so happy I’m not wasting time commuting to classes!

I love that online degree programs obliterate geographical limitations. Now the limiting factor feels like money. I dislike spending money on my own education when I’m trying to save for both of my sons’ college educations (in 7 and 6 years from now). But thankfully my employer is helping me pay for my degree and I have savings to rely on. And thanks to the option of summer courses I should be able to get my degree in less than 3 years!
I know that by getting my Master’s degree I’m investing in my future and the truth is I still love learning a lot!
